May I let my voice be a clarion call. I will use these words for justice. I will use these words for truth. And humour.

Time to Explain the Theodore Donald Karabotsos Autosig, and Mosey On

OK, the reason I've been including the quote in orange below is as a reminder that neither Jeffrey Lebowski or Walter Sobchak really had any idea of what Donny's wishes really were, so Walter just totally guessed. After getting ashes blown all over him as they were released from the coffee can up on the oceanside cliff, Jeffrey Lebowski got a bit upset with Walter for being so dumb about it and attaching all sorts of meaningless extra junk onto the pseudo-eulogy he delivered.

In the same way, the people of Christian churches presume to know the wishes of God. They think that an all-knowing, all-powerful God could somehow be summed up in a single bound volume, and have been going on and on, adding interpretations in, and claiming that their insistence on biblical inerrancy makes them tight with God in general. Meanwhile, the Dude abides, getting covered in ashes from the Christian coffee can. OK, that said, say goodbye to the autosig. If I do another, I promise it'll be more pithy, or more something or other.

pax hominibus,

"And so, Theodore Donald Karabotsos, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean"

I dunno Joel, I kinda dig the autosig. Maybe not as allegory so much, but on its own terms--bereaved friends struggling to make sense of their loss and do right by Donny. In the final analysis, how many people do we know that we could really make even a halfway accurate guess at their final wishes?
